KEEPING IT GREEN AT CRYSTAL SKY CAMP

Written by Vivika Stamolis

As the snow melts into summer, and the wildflowers paint the slopes, the land is breathing with new life. People are ready to get out and explore. Nature is always on our minds, especially when it comes to preserving it for seasons to come. It’s a priority in our plans and our decisions – and we hope it is in yours, too. We want to address the importance of conservation as we begin our first summer with Crystal Sky Camp coming to Campbell Basin in July 2021. Read on to learn about Crystal’s commitments to a greener future.

Elevated platforms have minimal impact on groundcover

Take to the alpine with a mindful approach this summer. Crystal Sky Camp, in partnership with Under Canvas, will have 20 safari-style canvas tents in Campbell Basin for adventure-seekers to retreat, reset, and relax with all the comforts of home; all while maintaining a minimal footprint. In alignment with Crystal’s commitment to the environment, Under Canvas’ mission involves conscious efforts to respect and give back to the areas they operate in.

Guests will notice some design features throughout camp that go a long way towards preserving the great outdoors — pull chain showers, faucets that automatically shut off, low-flow toilets and a towel reuse program. Accordingly, our camps use significantly less water and energy than a hotel of similar size.

Tent positioning and subsequent impacts are important considerations as the Crystal Sky Camp build begins. Campbell Basin is naturally an open area with mostly bare ground, which is ideal placement for these elevated wooden platforms that minimally affect the land. Using high-quality, USA-made materials, tents are built on durable surfaces so as not to harm vegetation. Dedicated green spaces will be closed to public, with signs and friendly reminders for guests to stay on trails only. Low level lighting mitigates light pollution and amplifies the night sky. Every design choice is made with intention.

Under Canvas camps are designed to minimize disturbance and maximize open space, each with dedicated, undisturbed green spaces. Land donations to the Forest Service, adaptive use, and partnerships with local conservation based organizations are also part of our commitment.

We make plans with purpose. Energy efficiency, waste reduction, resource conservation, and land preservation are incorporated into the entire experience here, from the tent setup to trail maintenance. Crystal Sky Camp is a fresh new way to retreat without the impacts of a hotel. Naturally, we can all make a difference in the way we adventure.
