Find Your Line. Which Crystal Freeride Program Is Right for You?
Written by: Ben Bertsch
Five athletes who are at the top of the same pitch won’t see the same run.
One will see a clean line through the trees. Another, a wind lip on the left. Someone else will plot three turns into a natural feature that everyone else missed.
That’s Freeride.
In Freeride, there’s not one correct way to ski or ride. Athletes build the skills, awareness, and freedom to make decisions in natural terrain. Technique and judgment matter. But once those pieces are there? That’s when the mountain opens up.
A run transforms from top-to-bottom to the art in between.
Crystal Freeride embodies that idea. It teaches athletes to read terrain, understand conditions, choose lines, and develop their own style.
Parents, you can let your athletes choose from three programs based on the experience they want. You can also participate in an Adult Freeride program. The choice is yours. How do you want to get creative on the mountain?

Freeride Development
Here, athletes start moving beyond the groomed trail.
Designed for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders ages 8 to 18, Development introduces athletes to off-piste terrain, changing snow, natural features, and the fundamentals of freeride skiing and riding.
The difference is easy to see on the mountain. A roller that used to be something to ski over becomes something to turn around. Then maybe something to jump.
A patch of trees becomes a place to start thinking about line choice. The terrain remains. The athlete’s relationship with it matures.
Freeride Development is for kids who already have the technical foundation to move around the mountain confidently and want to explore what Crystal has to offer.
Families can choose December, Winter, Spring, Peak Season, or Full Season options depending on how much time they want to spend with the program.
Best for: Intermediate and advanced skiers and riders ages 8 to 18 who are ready to explore more natural terrain and get their first real taste of freeride.
Crystal Freeride
Crystal Freeride takes that freedom farther.
Athletes still work on technique, but the point isn’t to make everyone ski or ride the same way. It’s to give them more options.
One athlete might take a fast line through the fall line. Another sees a feature off to the side and builds the run around it. Both start at the same point, look at the same terrain, and choose a different line.
That creative side of skiing and riding is a big part of Crystal Freeride. Athletes blend alpine and freestyle skills while learning how to navigate natural terrain, changing snow, and the decisions that come with both.
Competition is available, but it doesn’t have to be the goal. Plenty of athletes simply want to get better and become more creative big-mountain skiers and snowboarders.
Crystal Freeride is offered in December, Winter, and Spring sessions, along with Peak and Full Season options for athletes who want more time with their coach and group throughout the winter.
Best for: Experienced skiers and riders ages 8 to 18 who want Freeride to become a bigger part of how they ski or ride the mountain, with or without competition.
Freeride Competition
Competition changes the setting, not the idea.
An athlete still stands above the terrain, decides what they see, and chooses how they want to ski or ride it. The difference is that now there’s a start gate, a finish, and one run to put it together.
Freeride Competition is built for athletes who want to compete in regional and national IFSA events. Training combines dryland preparation with season-long coaching on Crystal’s steep, varied terrain.
Line choice matters. Execution matters. Athletes learn to plot a line, stick to it, and plan what happens after every feature they choose.
New one- and two-day Competition Team options also give families more flexibility in how they want to approach the season.
Best for: Skiers and riders ages 8 to 18 who want to train for IFSA competition and put their freeride skills into a competitive setting.
Adult Freeride
Yes, Freeride is for adults too.
Adult Freeride is built for advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders who want to spend more time in Crystal’s steeps, trees, natural features, and variable snow with a coach.
There’s no season-long commitment. One- and two-day sessions give adults a chance to get off the groomers, work on technique, and explore parts of the mountain they might normally ski past.
The same idea applies. Read the terrain. Understand the conditions. Make a decision. Find your line.
Best for: Advanced and expert adults looking for coached off-piste skiing or riding without committing to a full-season program.
Find Your Line.
Freeride isn’t about following a predetermined path.
Crystal changes constantly. Snow fills in features, wind reshapes terrain, and a line that didn’t exist last week can suddenly become the most interesting thing on the mountain.
Freeride athletes learn those changes, how to approach them, and eventually, to see possibilities that few others can.
That’s Freeride.
Five athletes at the top of the same pitch. Five different lines.
